The Case for Art

The Case for Art
Assemblage, 21"x24"x12", 1996
Not available; private collection

This work, Carolyn's signature piece, was originally created as a tribute to Hazel Salmi, the Richmond Art Center's founder, and was included in their 60th anniversary show and featured on the cover of the Center’s 1997 calendar. (Hazel Salmi brought art to the Richmond schools in the 1930's, riding from school to school on the trolley, carrying her art materials in a suitcase.)

Not a Good Drawer Not a Good Drawer
Assemblage, 34-1/2" x 17-1/2" x 14", 2000

This humorous piece is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the myth that a good drawer and a good artist are the same thing. In her art classes Carolyn likes to point out that there are many fine artists who do not use realistic draftsmanship, and many fine "drawers" whose work is not necessarily good art! Too many kids who do not consider themselves "good drawers" assume they no art talent. In her classes Carolyn connects these kids with the art talent they do indeed have.
