Collage and Assemblage Art by Carolyn Holm

Collage is an art form that makes use of pre-existing materials or objects that are attached to a two-dimensional surface. (The name is from the French word "coller" which means "to glue".) It is sometimes combined with other art media (such as paint, pencil, photography, stamp printing, etc.). Assemblage is a three-dimensional free-standing collage.

Carolyn Holm

Carolyn Holm is a collage and assemblage artist working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of her collages use recycled papers such as tissue papers, packing paper, and wallpapers, as well as paper she makes herself using pulp made from recycled papers and lint. She also likes to use photos, photocopies, fabric scraps, dried flowers, antique watch parts and other small artifacts.

She lives in El Cerrito, California, near San Francisco, with her husband and daughter. After working for many years as a graphic designer with her own design firm in San Francisco, she closed it when her daughter was born. But with that closing, another door opened, and she soon began teaching art to children, and wrote a book, Everyday Art for Kids, that received a Parent's Guide to Children's Media award in 1998. She is presently working on other writing projects, in addition to continuing her art work.
